What is a Precinct Delegate?

The Backbone of Our Party

  • Precincts are the country's smallest geopolitical unit and precinct delegates are the lowest elective office. Any registered voter can run for PD.
  • The office of precinct delegate is a partisan position, and does not require winning a general election–only a primary.
  • This year, the primary election will be held on August 6th
  • PDs are meant to represent their neighborhoods by attending and voting at county conventions. There will be 4 conventions during the 2-year term
  • Many precinct delegates will be chosen to be elevated to the state convention. There, candidates will be nominated for statewide offices such as Secretary of State, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, the Michigan Supreme Court, and the Board of Education.
  • Ultimately, PDs, while being a local, low-commitment role, have significant influence in deciding the leadership of their county and state parties. It is important for the health of our County Party that level-headed, pragmatic individuals occupy precinct delegate seats.

Become A Delegate

There's still time to become a precinct delegate! If you missed the filing deadline, you can file as a Write-in Candidate for Precinct Delegate through August 2, 2024, at 4:00 PM with your county clerk or with the appropriate precinct board on the day of the August primary any time before polls close.
